Mulch Calculator

Calculate mulch needed for garden beds: area, depth, bags or bulk cubic yards, including the 3-inch depth recommendation.

About this tool

This mulch calculator converts bed area and depth into cubic yards, bag counts and approximate weight — the numbers you need before ordering soil, compost or bark mulch.

Under-ordering means a second trip; over-ordering means a pile rotting in the driveway. Three inches is the sweet spot for weed control and moisture retention.

FAQ

How deep should mulch be?

2-4 inches (3 is standard). Deeper smothers roots and holds excess moisture; shallower lets weeds through.

Bagged or bulk?

Bulk is far cheaper above about 2 cubic yards. Bags make sense for small beds and easy transport.

Should I remove old mulch?

Only if it has matted into a water-blocking layer. Otherwise top it up to the correct depth.
